Since this item didn’t have any reviews, I took a chance on the purchase and am pretty well satisfied. This is my first review of a product and I hope it will guide you on your purchase.
The short and the skinny: This adapter works! It allows you to use your Nikon lenses on your Canon 5D Mark II body on manual settings. It feels extremely well constructed and it securely mounts the lens and the camera body. It has a small amount of play which didn’t affect my shooting experience. The description guarantees infinity focus. Yes, you can focus to infinity, but be warned that you can go slightly past infinity. The Dandelion chip worked very well and allowed my Canon to recognize and beep and confirm focus. I’m sure this feature will come in handy in situations when I can’t trust my naked eye. Buy this item if you need an adapter which feels secure and you need to use Nikon lenses on a Canon 5D Mark II body.
I have been a Nikon shooter (Nikon F3-F5, D100, D200) for over 15 years and LOVE the accuracy and color of Nikkor lenses. However, I have jumped onto the Canon 5D Mark II bandwagon for the 1080 HD video. This accessory allows me the benefit of using almost all Nikkor lenses, even old ones from about the 70′s. Overall, 11 Nikon lenses were tried and only 1 failed to mount. Me and my friend tested this adapter out on the field with 8 old Nikkor manual prime lenses: 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.4, 105mm 1.8, P Auto 105mm 2.5, 135mm 2.0, 28mm 2.8, 35mm 2.0, and 24mm 2.8. The 24mm 2.8 would NOT work with this adapter onto my Canon 5D Mark II because it has a longer tab that sticks out into the mounting area and hits the housing of the Canon body. Three D autofocus lenses with aperture control rings were also used in the test, the 50mm 1.4 and 2 zoom lenses, 35-70mm 2.8, and the venerable 80-200mm 2.8 (non-VR). All three AF D lenses worked extremely well. The details, color rendition, and Bokeh inherent in the lenses were impeccable! All lenses felt secure and worked flawlessly in the test except for the 24mm 2.8 which wouldn’t mount. The Dandelion chip signaled autofocus on all the lenses.
Here’s a bit of information on the use since the adapter didn’t come with instructions: Mount the adapter onto your lens by matching up the white arrow on the adapter to the white or black dot of your lens. Push down on the adapter and turn the adapter counterclockwise until the adapter clicks into place. The metal (non-black) side mounts to the lens. (The computer contacts on the Dandelion chip should be facing away from the lens.) Then, mount the lens onto the camera body by matching up the same white arrow on the adapter to the red dot on your camera body. turn the adapter + lens assembly clockwise and click into place. To remove the adapter, push the lock down (towards the front of the lens) and turn the adapter clockwise.
In conclusion, I would highly recommend this adapter to anyone who wishes to use Nikon lenses on a Canon 5D Mark II body. The Dandelion chip works perfectly and will be a benefit for those who need autofocus confirmation. I gave this product 4 stars instead of 5 because it has a small amount of play and it doesn’t stop the lens at infinity focus. One thing to consider is, there is NO APERTURE CONTROL on this adapter so if you have newer Nikon lenses with no external aperture controls, this adapter isn’t for you. I can’t say anything about the 2 other adapters offered by Fotodiox, the consumer, lowest level adapter, and the Pro version with no Dandelion AF confirm chip, but I’d rather just buy one adapter and have the security of having an AF confirm signal on those rare occasions when I absolutely need a confirmation of focus.
